The small town of Winsford in mid-Cheshire, where the Falk Salt company's Meadowbank salt works was located, lies around 30 miles as the crow flies from the Clayton Aniline chemical plant in east Manchester. The Falk site acquired a direct rail connection in 1870, when the Cheshire Lines Committee completed its Winsford & Over branch off the main line from Manchester to Chester, allowing the thriving company to send its products direct by rail to anywhere in the country.

It would be nearly half a century before Clayton Aniline enjoyed the same transport facilities, but their munitions work during the Great War finally provided the incentive for the rail network to build a link to their door. So by the time of the Big Four railway companies' heyday of the 1920s and 30s, both organisations would be sending their distinctly-liveried wagons out onto the local and national railway network on a regular basis. The steam-hauled goods trains of the era featured an endless variety of brightly-coloured wagons and vans proudly bearing the names of their owners, and our two wagons would have been prominent amongst them. And it would have been quite possible to have seen them coupled up together, particularly on the rail networks of the local area such as the Manchester Ship Canal railway.
